Does Creatine Increase Strength? What the Science Says
Creatine is one of the most extensively studied sports supplements, but one question remains common: does creatine actually increase strength?
The short answer is: yes. Current evidence suggests that creatine can improve muscular strength, particularly when combined with resistance training.
How can creatine help with strength?
During short, high-intensity exercise such as resistance training, muscles rely heavily on the phosphocreatine system to produce energy quickly.
Creatine supplementation can increase the amount of creatine stored in muscle. This may help support repeated high-intensity efforts and contribute to better training adaptations over time.
However, creatine does not replace training. Exercise remains the primary stimulus for increasing strength.
What does the research show?
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis analyzed 23 studies and found that combining creatine with resistance training significantly improved upper- and lower-body strength compared with placebo and training alone.
A more recent meta-analysis examined 69 studies involving 1,937 participants. It found significant improvements in several measures of strength, including approximately:
- +1.43 kg in bench/chest press strength;
- +5.64 kg in squat strength;
- improvements in certain measures of muscular power.
However, the results were not identical across all exercises or participants.
Does creatine make you stronger immediately?
Not necessarily.
Creatine does not work like a stimulant that produces an immediate feeling of increased strength. Its effects are related to increasing muscle creatine stores and supporting repeated high-intensity efforts.
It is therefore more accurate to think of creatine as a tool that may improve training performance and adaptations over time, rather than a shortcut to becoming stronger.
Can creatine also support muscle growth?
Research suggests that it can.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found that creatine combined with resistance training increased lean body mass compared with resistance training alone.
Some early changes in body weight can also be related to increased water stored within muscle, so gaining weight does not automatically mean gaining body fat.
Does everyone respond the same way?

Recent research suggests that the effects may be more noticeable in certain compound exercises, while some strength measures do not show statistically significant differences.
